IA for Climate Change Mitigation and Regeneration Planning

Session ID: 80
Status: pending
Format: Paper session
Accepts Submissions: Open
Conference Stream: S1. Special to IAIA

Session Description

Since 1972, more than 30 specialized types of IA tools have been developed in response to complex, interdependent and reinforcing environmental and social impacts that have significantly increased the dimensions and multiple levels of stress on planetary health.  A growing community of IA practitioners, risk analysts and Earth and Human Systems specialists are developing tailored system-based IA tools to assess alternative Greenhouse Gas (GHG) mitigation/restoration plans. These tools support financial and reinsurance risk analyses and actuarial research; environmental law institutions; networks promoting corporate targets, standards and reporting; educators; journalists; decision-makers; and public/private stakeholders.
This session is for all interested in addressing climate change impacts and the stressors on policies, programs and projects (PPPs) by incorporating systems-based assessment of GHG alternative mitigation/regeneration (M/R) plans.
Contributions are invited that focus on practical methods and innovations, especially those addressing the objectives of IAIA’s Climate Change and IA Action Plan https://iaia.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Selected-Elements-Under-the-IAIA-Climate-Change-and-IA-Action-Plan.pdf. What approaches help translate long-term, cumulative and collective impacts into IAs that are locally grounded and publicly meaningful? How do we assess transboundary climate impacts and uncertainties in ways that foster public confidence?
Session shall meld past and current system-thinking climate-related M/R lessons at global & local levels via interdisciplinary dialogue that can withstand scrutiny, invite trust & aid informed decision.

Session Summary

The session seeks to spark interdisciplinary dialogue on systems-thinking assessments of climate-inclusive mitigation/regeneration alternative actions, "glocally". It explores advances in applying IA tools to address climate risks through improved mitigation and regeneration planning at all levels of decision making.
