Session Description
Public participation is a fundamental element of democratic environmental governance, enabling individuals and communities to play a meaningful role in decisions that affect their lives and surroundings. Closely linked to this is social justice, which focuses on the equitable distribution of resources, opportunities, and environmental costs and benefits, while upholding human dignity and equality. Together, these principles support environmental decision-making that is inclusive, transparent, and responsive, particularly for communities that have historically been marginalized. The session should therefore be used to present best practice on how this can be achieved or how this is being implemented in various countries by Environmental Practitioners.
Session Summary
Public participation is a cornerstone of democratic environmental governance that, together with social justice, promotes inclusive, transparent, and equitable decision-making in environmental management. Within EIA processes, EAPs should facilitate meaningful engagement as they communicate technical information.
Additional Information
Beyond procedural compliance, EAPs contribute to social and environmental justice by creating conditions for inclusive and equitable participation. This includes identifying and addressing barriers faced by vulnerable and marginalised groups, enabling meaningful engagement, and ensuring that diverse perspectives are considered in decision-making processes. EAPs also bridge technical and local knowledge systems by translating complex scientific information into accessible formats while incorporating indigenous knowledge and lived experiences.
