Session Description
As investments in climate mitigation and adaptation continue to grow, there is increasing scrutiny of whether these actions are delivering their anticipated environmental, social and economic outcomes. The focus is no longer limited to ex ante assessment for decision-making, but increasingly extends to monitoring, evaluation and reporting on the outcomes delivered. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping how climate-related projects, programmes and policies are assessed throughout their lifecycle. AI is increasingly being applied across the impact assessment process, offering gains in accuracy and efficiency, as well as new opportunities to analyse large and complex datasets, improve impact prediction, support scenario analysis, and strengthen the monitoring of outcomes. At the same time, its growing use raises important questions regarding transparency, reliability, professional judgement and regulatory oversight.
This session will examine how AI is transforming impact assessment practice for climate action through practical experiences, lessons learned and methodological innovations aimed at improving the understanding of environmental, social and economic impacts. Contributions may explore applications of AI in renewable energy projects, industrial decarbonization initiatives, nature-based solutions and other climate measures, highlighting both the benefits achieved and the challenges encountered in practice. Particular attention will be given to the value AI can bring to impact assessment and outcome monitoring, as well as the limitations, risks and safeguards associated with its responsible and effective use.
Session Summary
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming impact assessment practice. This session will discuss use of AI in conducting strategic environment assessment of climate mitigation interventions, focusing on challenges, innovations, benefits, and safeguards for responsible use in ex-ante assessment, monitoring & evaluation.
