Session ID: 61
Status: pending
Format: Solution room
Accepts Submissions: Closed
Conference Stream: G7. Cumulative effects
Session Description
Cumulative effects assessment (CEA) is a challenging aspect of impact assessment practice. One of the strategic priorities of the IAIA Cumulative Effects (CE) Section is increasing member engagement in improving CEA practice and awareness. This Solution Room format session activates collective thinking to identify solutions to challenges previously identified by IAIA and CE Section members through discussions in the Hub. This structure enables member-identified difficulties or challenges to be explored collectively.
Topics selected for solution oriented brainstorming are based on their relevance to improving CEA effectiveness as a decision-support tool in Impact Assessment and integrated planning and management. Potential CEA examples that participants might address could be national and/or regional EIA systems and regulations, methodological aspects such as the selection of boundaries or integrating multiple CEA approaches for diverse VECs, moving from silo to holistic thinking, analyzing less tangible aspects, and community or Indigenous-led CEA.
The session will open with a brief review of outcomes from the CE Section session at IAIA26 and online Section meetings. The remaining time will be used for structured discussions, with participants brainstorming in small-groups. To encourage cross-jurisdictional exchange of practice and ideas, participants will self-organize into mixed-nationality tables to brainstorm and record responses before rotating to address a new challenge.
The challenges and solutions will be summarized in a document that will be available on IAIA’s CE Section Hub, with the potential of sharing it with other IAIA sections.
Session Summary
Join the CE Section’s interactive Solution Room where participants brainstorm solutions to challenges raised by IAIA members on the online CE Section Hub. Network with colleagues from other nations capturing solutions to advance the effectiveness of CEA in Impact Assessment.
