Session Description
Guided by the IAIA 2027 theme, "Ka mua, ka muri" (looking back to the past as a guide for the future), this session explores how Planning Support Systems (PSS) can bridge decades of environmental baselines with predictive modeling to accelerate the transition to carbon-neutral, climate-resilient cities. Over the past half-century, EIA has accumulated vast repositories of spatial and ecological data. Today, advanced digital twins, predictive AI frameworks, and interactive geodesign tools offer unprecedented opportunities to transform this historical knowledge into actionable foresight for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and managing climate risks.
We invite researchers, developers, and planners to showcase integrated digital frameworks that leverage retro-analysis to optimize zero-carbon urban forms and nature-based solutions. This session aims to demonstrate how PSS can embed robust carbon accounting and long-term climate vulnerability trends directly into the spatial planning fabric, fostering transparent, data-driven governance under deep uncertainty.

This session is organized in close alignment with major national and international initiatives dedicated to sustainable spatial transitions, specifically emphasizing the role of the Carbon-Neutral Urban Planning Research Group. We explicitly welcome empirical studies, methodological frameworks, and real-world tools that demonstrate how digital planning support systems can practically operationalize carbon-neutral targets, simulate regional net-zero pathways, and strengthen institutional responses to the escalating climate crisis.
