Session Description
Large mining landscapes rarely move in a straight line toward no net loss or nature positive outcomes. Progress is punctuated by pivotal turning points: a pollution incident, a regulatory step-change, a new discovery about ecological or cultural value, shifting community and Indigenous relationships, or a corporate biodiversity commitment that suddenly demands offset thinking at a scale the original strategy was never built for. These moments force a fundamental rethink of closure, restoration, and liability management across entire landscapes rather than individual sites.
This panel looks back at those turning points to understand how they reshaped strategic direction. Moving beyond routine technical retrospectives, this session asks "what changed and why" when a disruptive event becomes the catalyst for a stronger net gain trajectory. Panellists will present case studies where external shocks or portfolio-wide mandates prompted a redesign—from large-scale reclamation programs rebuilt after a crisis, to reimagined closure planning and offset strategies substantially reworked once the limits of the original approach were exposed.
The discussion explores what conditions turn an internal or external disruption into lasting strategic improvement, how corporate commitments force single-impact offset strategies to be rebuilt as landscape-level programs, and what makes a redesigned approach more durable than what it replaced.
