How Can We Support Assessment of Planetary Recovery Alternatives?

Session ID: 139
Status: approve
Format: Workshop
Accepts Submissions: Invitation only
Conference Stream: S1. Special to IAIA

Session Description

Traditional project-focused IA and SEA processes have not been sufficient to address breached planetary boundaries, compound nonlinear risks and potentially irreversible tipping points. Systems-based, forward-looking IA assessment of alternative mitigation/regeneration plans could be of special value to GCA partners like the Climate Governance Commission, Mobilizing an Earth Governance Alliance, the Systems Change Lab, the University of Exeter’s Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, the Earth Commission and other institutions, such as the NGFS, and reinsurance leaders. The application of systems-thinking foresight, cumulative impact analyses, back-casting, scenario analyses and simulations combined with multidisciplinary expertise, informing decision-makers jn selecting among the soundest long-term environmental, social and financial choices.
This session builds directly on tangible outcomes from the IAIA 2026 Quebec City counterpart session, How IA and SEA practitioners might best support the Global Commons Alliance (GCA) partners and related institutions. where 38 delegates formed five cross-cutting Research & Outreach (R/O) workgroup panels to identify the potential for collaboration with GCA-aligned institutions, Over 30 institutions are working on planetary recovery initiatives, spanning finance, insurance, earth governance, AI analytics, futures thinking, young professional development and communication with youth.
It seeks contributions from IA and SEA practitioners, IAIA leadership, established R/O panel coordinators and members to advance the assessment of Planetary Recovery alternative mitigation/regeneration plans. These assessments of alternatives also

Session Summary

Through workshop deliberations and paper presentations, this session combines examination of next steps to support planetary recovery institutions in applying systems-thinking IA to assess mitigation/regeneration plan alternatives as well as co-develop actionable plans to minimize planetary environmental, social and financial risks and uncertainty.

Additional Information

This workshop complements the Fit for Future Initiative and related IAIA discussions on Global Commons Alliance partner initiatives. 3F is proposing a stream called “Systems and strategic thinking for planetary recovery.” To maximize cross-participation and avoid duplication, please schedule it so it does not overlap with other sessions proposed for this stream.
