Session Description
Governance structures are crucial for effective IA follow-up, a critical component of best practice. IA follow-up governance incorporates all the processes, mechanisms and arrangements required to enable its implementation. Despite its importance, implementation of follow-up is still considered a chronically overlooked aspect of IA.
With the IAIA best practice principles on IA follow-up (https://iaia.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/BEST-PRACTICE-IA-Follow-up.pdf) serving as the basis of the discussion and more recent works focusing on IA follow-up and governance (e.g., Smith & Morrison-Saunders 2025, 2026; Malvestio et al, 2026; Agaba & Fischer, 2026), the session will look into how the current state of play vis-à-vis IA follow-up and the relatively new discussion on governance aspects, is shaping the future of IA follow-up.
Prospective papers to be presented in the session may look at different aspects of IA follow-up governance such as legislative provisions, compliance and enforcement, adaptive management, performance criteria, resource allocation, effectiveness and efficacy, transparency, accessibility and legitimacy. Understanding these different governance elements, together with the presentation of potential case studies of IA follow-up implementation, will assist achieving the goal of the session, i.e., looking how governance and follow-up and their interlinkages will shape the future of IA.
