Session Description
The Government of Canada has proposed changes to legislation, regulations, and policies to ensure project decisions are made in a timely manner while maintaining strong environmental protections and respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples. Relevant federal departments and agencies are working together, along with provinces and territories, project proponents, First Nations and Indigenous groups to achieve this, including by reducing duplication, improving coordination between government departments, and making consultation processes easier for Indigenous Peoples and project proponents to navigate. Proposals include: limiting federal government review and decision-making to one year; ensuring that affected Indigenous groups go through one clear and coordinated consultation process for each project, to mitigate consultation fatigue; combining all federal decisions required for a project into one; assigning responsibility for each project assessment to a single authority; enabling economic zones through regional impact assessments to reduce the need for separate project reviews; and other measures to streamline regulatory processes. This session will bring together representatives from key departments and agencies of the Government of Canada to discuss the proposed path forward.
